How to Start a BBM Chat on Your BlackBerry Q10 Mobile Phone

One feature that has been a part of almost every iteration of the BlackBerry since the beginning is called BlackBerry Messenger, or BBM for short. The feature is designed to allow instant communication between two or more BlackBerry users, similar to the way that users of a computer program like AOL Instant Messenger or Google’s GChat can instantly communicate at the press of a button. Starting a BBM chat is different from just sending a mass SMS text message. Every member of the chat can see the responses of every other member instantly as they are sent, similar to the way a regular chat room functions on the Internet. Starting a BBM chat on your BlackBerry Q10 mobile phone is something you can do in just a few quick seconds.

Step 1
Close any application that you may currently be browsing on your BlackBerry Q10 mobile phone and return to the main “Home” screen. Unlike the steps that you would take on previous BlackBerry models, the easiest way to start a BlackBerry Messenger chat is through a dedicated icon on the “Home” screen of the device.

Step 2
Tap the “BlackBerry Messenger” icon on the “Home” screen of your device. The icon does not actually say “BlackBerry Messenger” and is instead labeled with an icon of multiple silhouettes. The icon should always be located near the top of the screen under the default circumstances. Tapping the icon will automatically cause the main BlackBerry Messenger application screen to appear.

Step 3
Scroll through the list of people on screen and select the person that you want to chat with. The contact entries in the “Contacts” application on your device will all be represented in the window on screen. Tapping on a person’s name will add them to the chat session you are in the process of creating.

Note that you can also chat with multiple people at once by tapping more than one name in the window on screen. Tap the button labeled “Done” when you are finished adding people to your chat session.

Step 4
Being your chat by composing the first message using the window on screen. The chat doesn’t actually begin until you have composed and sent a message to all the people that you previously specified. The message can be as long or as short as you’d like depending on your preferences. The message also doesn’t even need to be made up of words if you so choose. You can begin a BlackBerry Messenger chat session with a simple emoticon if you prefer.

Step 5
Press the button labeled “Send.” The message that you composed will be sent to all of the people that you previously specified. Note that all of their responses to that message will both be visible to everyone else who is a part of the chat and will also be visible in real time. “Real Time” means that everyone will see each message immediately as it is sent by its creator.
